Understanding Alice Klock and Her Creative Process

Alice Klock is one of the most intriguing choreographers I have ever met. She has so many unique sides to her – not only is she an amazing dancer and choreographer she is also an incredible visual artist. When I found out that Hubbard Street’s Professional Program (HS Pro) was going to be working with Alice I was so excited. I remember I would always watch Alice in Hubbard Street’s rehearsal and would always be amazed from a far. So getting the chance to work with her directly was a dream come true.

Her process wasn’t very long – only two weeks. It however, still blows my mind how efficiently and quickly she works. She comes up with material on the spot in seconds. The crazy thing is, her pieces are always phenomenal. Her movement is also very unique – almost distorted but in the most beautiful way possible.

I also had the privilege of understudying her piece Fold Me for Hubbard Street. Again her process was so efficient and she created one of the most impeccable pieces I had ever seen. The first time I watched it from start to finish it gave me goosebumps. There was a particular duet that involved a hoodie that was being interchanged between the two dancers. The shapes they were creating with their bodies was absolutely insane in the best way possible. Alice Klock is an absolute mastermind and I am so excited to continue to follow her choreographic career.

She continues to be a female inspiration and one of the most powerful up and coming choreographers in the dance industry.
