Dance As a Language for Wen Wei Wang

Chatting with choreographer Wen Wei Wang was a big deal for all of us at DancerMusic.com as this was the first story on our site that covered Canadian dance. Being a Canadian myself, this story was particularly special for me. It was an honour to bring part of my home roots to DancerMusic.com and I couldn’t think of a more amazing choreographer to launch this special moment with.

I had worked with Wen Wei back when I was in University completely my undergraduate degree, so I was very excited to talk to him again. I was interested in one of his works he was creating titled Dialogue. This piece was inspired by his personal experience as a non-English speaking immigrant to Canada and explored the challenges faced when trying to communicate with others. I was very intrigued by his concept and wanted to get a better understanding of his experience. When I spoke with him on the phone, he began to explain to me how he would often use dance as a medium for communication. That’s what I find absolutely amazing – how dance can be such a universal language and bring together so many cultures and unique individuals. Wen Wei continues to be an inspiration to many, and it was truly a pleasure getting the opportunity to speak with him.
