Coming Full Circle With Dezza Dance’s Desirée Dunbar
I have known Desirée Dunbar for over 5 years now, and it’s always a pleasure getting to talk to her. I first met Desiree back in my undergraduate years at Simon Fraser University. She quickly became not only a great teacher, but a huge mentor in my life. She guided me through multiple challenges and supported me in my transition from student to professional. Working in her company Dezza Dance was such an incredible experience and a great way to start my professional career as an artist.
I have done many interviews with Desirée, but almost always she is the one interviewing me. So getting the opportunity to interview her about her new piece Deep Roots was such a fun experience. To be on the other side of the table and to be the one asking questions was such a full circle moment for me. Not to mention how incredible the story ended up being. Desirée provided so much insight to her creative process and such depth about the piece itself. I was amazed by her concept, creativity, and elaborative responses.
Desirée has always stuck me as such an influential individual. She is the type of person who puts her best foot forward and gives 100 percent of her self to what she is doing. Knowing I have her continuous support is something I will always be grateful for. She has not only been and incredible mentor over the years, but an amazing friend.
